What Is Full Contact Karate?
Full contact karate, also known as knockdown karate, is a style of karate where fighters use powerful, full-force punches, kicks, and knees in sparring (kumite) with the goal of knocking out (by body blow or head kick) or overwhelming the opponent. Unlike traditional karate’s light-contact point sparring, full contact karate focuses on realistic combat with minimal padding (mouthguard, groin protector, and sometimes gloves and shin guards). It emphasizes stamina, technique, and body conditioning for continuous, hard-hitting exchanges, allowing for knockdowns as a decisive win. While it has roots in Okinawan karate, full contact karate was popularized by Mas Oyama’s Kyokushin (meaning “Ultimate Truth”) in Japan, emphasizing realistic application.

IS FULL CONTACT KARATE THE RIGHT CHOISE FOR MYSELF OR MY CHILD?
We believe the answer to be YES! While there are many martial arts options that can provide you with physical fitness and help you build confidence, the most important aspect of your martial arts training is practicality. Our training is focused on proven-to-work fighting techniques. We want to ensure that our students, of all ages, learn techniques that they can use to defend themselves if they are ever put in a position where they have no other option. As once said by the great Japanese samurai and author, Miyamoto Musashi, “it is better to be a warrior in a garden, than to be a gardener in a war.”
